Trueb, Vatti Excel for Bentley During GBTC Invitational

BOSTON, Mass. -- Sophomore Curtis Trueb (Eastchester, N.Y./Eastchester HS) and junior Mike Vatti (Easton, Pa./Easton Area HS) were the top performers for the Bentley University men's indoor track and field team Sunday afternoon when it launched the 2011 portion of its schedule in the Greater Boston Track Club Invitational at Harvard University's Gordon Track and Tennis Center.

A number of personal bests, including one by Trueb in the mile, were recorded in the team's first meet under the leadership of new head coach Kevin Curtin.

Trueb was first among 92 participants in the mile run, with his time of 4:14.11 not only a personal best by 3.15 seconds but good for fifth on Bentley's all-time list in the event. He won the race by 3.25 seconds over Corey Brunelle of Providence College.

Vatti captured the 400 meter invitational with a time of 50.70 seconds, six-tenths of a second faster than Nik Andrews of Providence. He also won his heat and was seventh of 70 in the 200 meters, finishing in 22.98 seconds, and his afternoon also included running a leg on Bentley's 4x440 yard relay team which was fifth of eight in 3:38.46.

Personal bests were posted in the 3,000 meters by sophomore John Drago (Avon, Conn./Avon HS) and senior Steve Gendron (Lowell/Lowell HS), with times of 8:46.14 and 8:52.02, respectively. Drago was second of 55 runners, trailing Roland Lavallee of New Boston Balance by a little more than six seconds, and Gendron was seventh.

Sophomore Derek Sit (Wellesley/Wellesley HS) won his heat in both the 60 and 200 meter dashes, with both times personal bests.  He was 18th of 54 overall in the 60 (7.42 seconds) and 22nd of 70 in the 200 (23.81). Sit also was part of Bentley's 4x220 yard relay team which was second of four in 1:37.28.

In the 60 meter hurdles, senior Tim Walant (Nashua, N.H./Nashua HS North HS) and junior Jim O'Connor (Valatie, N.Y./Ichabod Crane HS) were fifth and sixth, respectively, in a field of 22. Walant finished in 8.77 seconds and O'Connor recorded an 8.81, both personal bests.

Other top ten finishes for Bentley athletes were posted by junior Steve Long (Allston/Newton North HS), senior David Kusmin (Westwood/Westwood HS) and sophomore Craig Robinson (Scarborough, Maine/Scarborough HS). Long was fourth of 26 in the shot put (44'9.25"), Kusmin was eighth of 21 in the long jump (19'6.25") and Robinson was eighth of 92 in the mile (a personal best 4:22.91).

Coming up for the Falcons are the Boston Indoor Games at the Reggie Lewis Center on Friday and the Boston University Terrier Classic on Saturday.
