Bentley Falls in NE10 First Round to Adelphi

OCEANSIDE, N.Y. – No. 3 seed Adelphi advanced to the semifinals of the Northeast-10 Men's Tennis Championship with a 4-0 victory over the No. 6 seed Bentley University on Tuesday afternoon.

The Panthers (8-7) won two of the three doubles matches to earn the doubles point and took a 1-0 lead into singles play.

Adelphi then won the three matches they needed to clinch, with the order of finish the No. 2 match, followed by No. 3 and No. 1.

Both of the doubles matches that finished were closely contested. The Panthers won the first match that finished in No. 2, with the team of Pietro Sole and Salomon Lema defeating Bentley's Alex Novins (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley) and Jordan Soifer (Stamford, Conn./Westhill) 6-4.

In No. 3, Adelphi's Thiago Negrao and Valentin Groupil-Maier slipped past Gabe Horwitz (Lake Oswego, Ore./Lake Oswego) and Liam Marr (Franklin, Mass./Franklin) by a 7-5 score.

Bentley's No. 1 doubles pairing of graduate students Connor Aulson (Groveland, Mass./Pentucket) and Daniel Weitz (Roslyn, N.Y./Roslyn) were ahead 6-5 over Marko Jovanovic and Gabe Balestero, but the match went unfinished as Adelphi had already clinched the doubles point.

The first singles point to go on the board was the No. 2 match when Balestero defeated Aulson 6-1, 6-2. Next was No. 3 with Adelphi's Adi Saginayev over Soifer 6-4, 6-1. The No. 1 match went to Jovanovic over Weitz by a 6-1, 6-3 score.

Adelphi advances on to the semifinals where they will meet the No. 2 seed Southern New Hampshire on Thursday.

Bentley's record fell to 11-10.
