Bentley Looks to Turn the Tables on Franklin Pierce Tuesday in Northeast-10 Playoffs

WALTHAM, Mass. – Bentley will enter the Northeast-10 Men's Tennis Championships as the No. 5 seed, and they will take on the No. 4 seed Franklin Pierce in the first round on Tuesday. The match will take place at 2:00 pm at the indoor Bass River Tennis Club in Beverly, Mass.

The Falcons finished the regular season with a 14-9 mark overall and 5-4 in NE10 matches after they defeated Adelphi 5-4 in the regular season finale on Saturday.

One of those four NE10 defeats was a 5-4 upset defeat to Franklin Pierce back on April 7 up in New Hampshire. That result nine days ago turned out to be the difference in Tuesday's match being hosted by the Ravens, as the teams finished with identical 5-4 NE10 records, but Franklin Pierce had the head-to-head tiebreaker.

The Falcons have gone as far as the NE10 semifinals every year since 2007, and will look to keep that streak going with a win on Tuesday. This will however be the first time since that year that they have played the first round on the road.

Part of that streak included back-to-back NE10 titles in 2010 and 2011, and another finals appearance in 2012.

This season, Bentley will go into the postseason with a balanced lineup. In NE10 matches, four players have won at least half of their singles matches. That group is freshmen Connor Aulson (6-0) and Daniel Weitz (5-3), senior George Samander (5-4) and junior Michael Fuca (6-2).

Aulson comes into the postseason on a tear, having won 12 straight singles matches in all competitions.

Head coach Rick Edelman's No. 1 doubles team this season has been the pairing of seniors Samander and Brendan McCarthy, who are an impressive 6-3 in No. 1 matches in NE10 play this season. Fuca and Brett Gilman have also been a strong team at No. 2 with a 4-2 record, and a 5-2 mark overall in conference.

In the earlier season matchup between the Falcons and Ravens, Bentley led 2-1 after doubles behind wins from Gilman and Fuca in No. 2 and Aulson and Dylan Granat in No. 3. The Ravens though rallied in singles by winning four of the six matches. Bentley's wins came from Weitz in No. 4 and Aulson in No. 6.

The winner of Tuesday's match will meet the top seed Southern New Hampshire in the semifinals on Thursday. The other first round match on Tuesday sees the No. 3 seed Le Moyne host the No. 6 seed Stonehill, with the winner going on to face No. 2 seed Merrimack in the semis.

The NE10 championship match will take place on Saturday, April 21 at 1:00 pm on the campus of the highest remaining seed.
