McCarthy Highlights Bentley’s Appearance at UConn Invitational

STORRS, Conn. – The Bentley men's tennis team competed at the UConn Invitational over the weekend, along with several Division I squads, and the team's performance was highlighted by sophomore Brendan McCarthy (Falmouth, Maine/Maine).

In singles play, McCarthy won two matches to advance to the semifinals of the North bracket, one of four main singles tournaments played over the weekend. He first defeated Nick Lamart of Bryant, 6-4, 5-7, 10-5. In the quarters he knocked off Anthony Santino of Sacred Heart 6-1, 3-6, 10-7. His run however, was ended in the semifinals by Kyle Alper of Quinnipiac on Sunday by a 2-6, 6-4, 13-11 score.

Freshman Dylan Granat (Woodbury, N.Y./Syosset) also won a first round match in the North bracket, 2-6, 6-4, 10-7 over Chris Toner of UConn, before he fell in the quarters to Alper. Sophomore Daniel Camacho (Bogota, Colombia) also won a first round match, defeating Cory Dipaola of Bryant 6-4, 7-5 in the West bracket, before falling the quarters.

In doubles, McCarthy and sophomore George Samander (Willemstad, Curacao/ISC) won two matches in the A Doubles consolation draw to reach the finals. They defeated Dan Rombola and Alex Romaine of Hartford 7-6 in the quarters and Miguel Belfort and Nick Majewski of Merrimack in the semis 7-6, before they were beaten by John Edwards and Justin Warren of UConn in the finals 6-4.

In the B doubles consolation draw, Bentley's team of Brett Gilman (Mahwah, N.J./Mahwah) and Felipe Palacios (Bogota, Colombia) made it to the finals, defeating teammates Chase Rosa (Hampton, N.H./Berwick Academy) and Sam Frye (Redlands, Calif./Redlands) in the semis 6-0, but they were beaten by Merrimack's team of Frank Vega and Tyler Clontz 6-3 in the finals.

Bentley is back in action on Wednesday when they visit Franklin Pierce for its first Northeast-10 match of the season.
