Queens (N.Y.) Tops Bentley 5-0 in East Regional #2 Final

WALTHAM, Mass. – Second-seeded Queens (N.Y.) advanced to the Division II NCAA Championships next week with a 5-0 victory over the third-seeded Bentley University men's tennis team in the finals of the East Regional #2.

The Knights won the first two doubles matches decisively, as senior Dave Burstein and junior Diego Medrano defeated junior Victor Suski (West Hartford, Conn./William Hall) and freshman Andrew Waddington (Granby, Conn./Granby Memorial) 8-1 in number three doubles, and junior Atilla Toth and sophomore Nikolaj Wulff beat sophomores Lucas Wever (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Chapel School) and Rodrigo Ribeiro (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Chapel School) 8-2 in number one doubles.

The number two doubles match finished last and was much closer, and could have gotten Bentley to within 2-1 heading into singles, but Queens won it and instead and went up 3-0. Senior Fabio Minami and freshman Andre Pellegrino outlasted juniors Alec Spycher (Sarasota, Fla./Saint Stephens Episcopal) and Zach Tuckman (Kinnelon, N.J./Morristown Beard School) in a match that went to a tiebreak, 9-8 (4).

The singles matches Queens won were Medrano over Ribeiro 6-0, 6-2 in the third-flight and Pellegrino over Waddington 6-1, 6-1 in the sixth-flight.

Bentley finishes its season at 14-8, while the Knights improve to 20-5. They will meet Valdosta State next Wednesday in the round of 16 in Altamonte Springs, Fla.
