Hosts Bentley Set to Open NCAA East Regional Against SNHU Monday

WALTHAM, Mass. – The hosts of the NCAA Division II Men's Tennis East Regional #2 Bentley University will open up play Monday at 10:00 a.m. against Southern New Hampshire in a rematch of the Northeast-10 final that the Falcons won on April 23.

The Falcons (13-7) are seeded third in the East Region and Southern New Hampshire (12-6) is sixth. The lower half of the bracket has second-seeded Queens (N.Y.) (18-5) taking on seventh-seeded University of the Sciences (9-7) at 1:00 p.m. The winners will meet on Tuesday at noon with a trip to the 16-team NCAA Championships in Altamonte Springs, Fla., on the line.

The other half of the East Region takes place in Bethlehem, Pa., and has fourth-seeded Philadelphia University taking on fifth-seeded Merrimack, with the winner taking on top-seeded Concordia (N.Y.) for a berth in the final 16.

Bentley has had a second straight stellar season. They claimed a three-way share of the NE-10 regular season title with SNHU and Merrimack with a record of 10-1, then knocked off both teams on its way to a second straight playoff title.

The Falcons and Penmen have had two big matches this season, with each team winning on the road. Southern beat Bentley in the regular season 6-3 on April 3, ending the Falcons' 22-match NE-10 winning streak. They got their revenge though in the NE-10 finals, rallying from 4-3 down to defeat the Penmen 5-4 behind singles wins from freshman Andrew Waddington (Granby, Conn./Granby Memorial) and junior Victor Suski (West Hartford, Conn./William Hall).

Bentley is making its third straight appearance in the NCAA Tournament and fifth in the last six years. For Southern, it's their first tournament berth.

Both teams were well represented on the All-Conference teams. Bentley had four, led by sophomore Lucas Wever (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Chapel School), named to the second team in No. 1 singles after going 9-2 in that flight. Sophomore Rodrigo Ribeiro (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Chapel School), Suski and Waddington were the team's other All-Conference selections.

Southern's Mitchell Dobek was the NE-10's Player of the Year and five other Penmen earned All-Conference spots in singles, including Rookie of the Year Juan Arango-Campo.

Queens, a member of the East Coast Conference, won the conference title for the second straight season, defeating the University of the District of Columbia 5-1. The Knights are 18-5 on the season and had five All-Conference picks, including the ECC Player of the Year junior Atilla Toth.

The Blue Devils are making their second NCAA Tournament appearance in the last three years. They earned an at-large bid after going 4-2 in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference regular season and advanced to the CACC Tournament semifinals before losing to Philadelphia. Two of their players earned All-Conference honors, freshman David Kazakevich and junior Alvaro Vargas.

Bentley didn't play either Queens or USciences this season, but they have played Queens in the last two NCAA Tournaments.
