Day 4 of Northeast-10 Championships Features 4 Golds for Bentley Men; Falcons Place 2nd

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The closing day of the 2022 Northeast-10 Conference Men's Swimming and Diving Championships at Southern Connecticut State University's Hutchinson Natatorium featured four gold medals and four school records for the Bentley University Falcons.

Bentley, which had won three of the previous four championships, finished a close second to Southern Connecticut this time around, trailing the Owls by 24.5 points. Southern totaled 695.5 points while Bentley had 671 after accumulating 21 medals, including nine golds.

For third time in as many conference championships, senior Mark Zoda (Nashua, N.H./Bishop Guertin HS) earned five golds. Number 14 came in the 100 yard freestyle as he prevailed by 0.44 seconds over Southern Connecticut's Franklin Kuhn. His finals time of 45.51 seconds broke his own school record, set during the prelims by one-hundredth of a second. The mark entering the weekend, 42.72, was set by Zoda in December.

Zoda's final trip to the top of the podium came after he led Bentley to victory in the 400 free relay. The Falcons were down by .06 seconds when he entered the pool and wound up winning by 1.57 seconds with a 3:04.82. The team also included senior Zach Papsco (Northport, N.Y./Northport HS) and juniors Anthony Vizental (Concord, Calif./Clayton Valley HS) and Ryan Looney (Wilton, Conn./ Wilton HS).

Vizental earned the gold in the 200 butterfly with his winning time of 1:50.08 breaking Frank Elenio's three-year-old school record by 1.16 seconds. Also in the 200 fly, Papsco was sixth (1:54.27) and freshman Joey Twomey (Sebastian, Fla./Sebastian River HS) was seventh (1:54.96).

Sophomore Andrew Matjucha (Randolph, N.J./Randolph HS) made it a sweep of the distance freestyle events by placing first in the 1650 yard freestyle with a 16:27.09. He reached the wall nine seconds in front of runner-up Dylan Prescher of Southern Connecticut. Earlier in the weekend, Matjucha earned gold in the 500 free and 1000 free.

Junior Tanner Eisenhut (Jamesville, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius HS) broke the school record in the 200 breaststroke while finishing second. Eisenhut's 2:05.69 improved on a record Connor Mulvey-Hudson held since 2016 by 1.21 seconds. Also in the 200 breast, freshman Pat Tarka (Watchung, N.J./ Oratory Prep HS) was sixth in 2:16.71.

Looney, in addition to being a part of the 400 free relay, was fourth in the 200 backstroke (1:57.43).
