WALTHAM, Mass. – Expectations are high for the Bentley University swimming and diving teams, who'll be at Southern Connecticut State University Thursday though Sunday for the 2022 Northeast-10 Conference Championships.

No spectators are allowed for the four-day championships, but all sessions will be streamed over the NE10 NOW Digital Network (www.NE10NOW.tv).

Both Bentley teams are projected to finish first by a pre-championship poll of conference coaches. The men's team will be looking to earn a third straight Northeast-10 championship and the Falcon women will be seeking their first after ten consecutive top-three showings.

In the women's voting, first-place votes were distributed among three teams with Bentley receiving four, defending champion Southern Connecticut three and Assumption two. Point totals for the top three were Bentley 59, Southern Connecticut 57 and Assumption 51.

The men's voting was even tighter with Bentley collecting four firsts and 34 points and Southern Connecticut three and 33.

Current Bentley swimmers and divers have previously made 48 trips to the medal podium, collecting 16 golds, 13 silvers and 19 bronze medals. At the top of the list is 10-time Northeast-10 champion Mark Zoda (Nashua, N.H./Bishop Guertin HS), who won five golds during both the 2019 and 2020 championships. Last year's meet was cancelled due to the pandemic.

Zoda is a two-time defending NE10 champion in the 100 and 200 yard freestyle events, and helped Bentley capture the three freestyle relays each of the last two championships.

Other former Northeast-10 champions who'll be competing for the Falcons are a quartet of juniors: 2020 NE10 Women's Diver of the Year Mary Huminski (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand HS), Anthony Vizental (Concord, Calif./Clayton Valley HS), Kate Galvin (Suffern, N.Y./Suffern HS) and Dariana Gonzales (Stamford, Conn./Westhill HS). Huminski swept the diving in 2020, Vizental won the 400 individual medley two years ago, and both Galvin and Gonzales earned their golds in the 800 free relay.

Galvin made seven trips to the podium as a freshman in 2020, with two seconds and four thirds in addition to the gold. Gonzales made it in six of seven events with two seconds and three thirds.

Senior Zach Papsco (Northport, N.Y./Northport HS) is still looking for his first gold, but his first two championships included three silvers and five bronze medals.

A look at the psych sheets show that Bentley has the top qualifying performance in 23 of the 42 events, with the women listed at the top of 13 and the men ten. Zoda is at the top of the list in the 50, 100 and 200 free style while Galvin (50 free, 100 free), Huminski (one meter, three meter), sophomore Emma Hapkiewicz (South Windsor, Conn./South Windsor HS) (1000 free, 1650 free), Gonzales (200 free, 200 back) and Papsco (100 fly, 100 breast) are each first in two individual events.

Coach Mary Kay Samko's team also has the top entry time in six of the ten relays.

The 2022 championship gets underway at 6 pm Thursday with the 800 free relay. Live results will be available on the Meet Mobile app.
