Four to Serve as Bentley Swim Captains

WALTHAM, Mass. -- Seniors Aidan Karam (Norwich, Conn./Norwich Free Academy), Jess Chen (Darien, Conn./Darien HS), Emily Niemiec (Meriden, Conn./Francis T. Maloney HS) and Anne Warren (Ellicott City, Md./Mt. Hebron HS) will serve as captains of the 2017-18 Bentley University men's and women's swimming and diving teams, head coach Mary Kay Samko announced.

At the Northeast-10 Championships last February, Karam helped the Falcons claim silver in the 400 free relay and had a best individual finish of sixth in the 200 yard freestyle. The bronze medal winner in the 1650 free at the 2015 NE10's, he ranks third in program history in the 200 free (1:43.76), 500 free (4:41.13), 1000 free (9:56.26) and the 1650 free (16:35.11).

Chen, a freestyler, enters her final season with career best times of 25.54 in the 50 free, 55.30 in the 100 and 2:00.60 in the 200. She was 17th in the 100 free at the 2017 NE10 Championships and a member of four relay teams that finished in the top 12.

Niemiec is coming off an outstanding junior year, one that saw her recognized as the co-MVP of the women's team and the Women's Swimmer of the Meet at the Northeast-10 Championships. She claimed her third straight NE10 title in the 200 breaststroke and was also the conference champ in both the 200 individual medley and the 400 IM. Niemiec currently owns the individual school records in the 200 breast (2:21.71), the 200 IM (2:05.92) and the 400 IM (4:29.12) as well as the best mark in program history in four relays.

Warren, the recipient of the team's Scholar-Athlete Award last season, is a two-time Academic All-Northeast-10 honoree and the 2017 NE10 champion in the 200 butterfly. She ranks second in program history in the 200 fly (2:07.13), fourth in both the 100 fly (59.74) and the 400 IM (4:41.43), and her name is attached to the school record in the 400 medley relay.

Bentley opens its season Saturday at Wheaton College. Last year, the Falcon men finished 11-0, in addition to capturing the Northeast-10 championship, and the women's team was 11-1.
