Bentley Finishes 2nd in WPI Gompei Invitational with Connolly & Bridge Leading the Way

WORCESTER, Mass. – Sophomore Tim Connolly (Dorchester/Boston Latin Academy) registered a pair of second-place finishes and classmate Colton Bridge (Tolland, Conn./Tolland HS) earned his team's only first-place performance of the meet as the Bentley University men's swimming and diving team completed action in the Gompei Invitational at WPI Sunday.

Bentley, with a score of 3,088 points, was second to the host institution in the team standings with the Engineers amassing 5,861 points in their home pool. Roger Williams University (2,155), Clark University (1,691) and Brandeis University (994) followed in the two-day, five-team meet.

Bridge after placing second in Saturday's one-meter competition, captured the three-meter with a 351.45. He was even better in the prelims, posting a score of 376.15. Freshman  Nick Cilia (Brentwood, N.H./Exeter HS) followed in third with a 213.35.

Connolly led a strong Bentley effort in both the 50 yard backstroke and the 100 back, placing second in each with times of 26.14 and 54.94. Sophomore Sebastian Bury (Bellevue, Wash./Newport Senior HS) was fourth in the 50 (26.54) and seventh in the 100 (58.82) while junior Josh Witty (Los Gatos, Calif./Los Gatos HS) finished fourth in the 100 (57.16) and sixth in the 50 (27.03).

Connolly also led off the Falcons' 200 medley relay that finished fourth in 1:40.09. That quartet also included seniors Phillip Chan (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier HS), Andreas Mouritsen (Greve, Denmark) and Steve Sylvia (Westerly, R.I./Westerly HS).

Mouritsen took third in the 200 freestyle (1:45.81) and the Falcons also received a third from sophomore Owen Karl (Rochester, N.Y./Brighton HS) in the 1650 free (17:22.34). In that same event, freshman Davis Wilson (Ransom Canyon, Texas/Lubbock HS) was fifth in 17:36.39. Bentley's other fifth came from sophomore Alex Liulakis (Tenafly, N.J./Tenafly HS), with a 2:04.75 in the 200 butterfly.

In the meet-ending 400 free relay, Bentley finished third with Bury, Wilson, Sylvia and Mouritsen finishing in 3:14.99.

Bentley's next action will be in exactly a month, Jan. 8 against St. Michael's College.
