Curran & Belanger Help Bentley Best Gordon in Pool, 164-70; Walsh Earns Trip to NCAA Championships

WALTHAM, Mass. – Senior Dave Curran (Danbury, Conn./Danbury HS) and sophomore Peter Belanger (Andover/Andover HS) each won two individual events and senior Mike Walsh (South Salem, N.Y./John Jay HS) broke a school record en route to qualifying for the NCAA Division II Championships as Bentley University topped Gordon College, 164-70, in men's college swimming at the Dana Center pool Wednesday night.

Curran, who swam the third leg on Bentley's winning 200-yard medley relay team, finished first in the 50 backstroke (27.81 seconds) and the 50 butterfly (25.82). Belanger's wins came in the 100 fly (57.85) and the 100 freestyle (51.91).

Walsh broke his own school record for 11 dives off the one-meter by about 18 points with a combined score of 453.59. He scored a 190.50 in the five-dive voluntary, and registered a 263.09 in the six-dive optional, with his performance earning him the right to compete in the qualifying meet at the NCAA Division  II Championships in Mansfield, Texas this coming March.  He competed in both events without opposition.

Bentley swept the five freestyle events and won 15 of 16 overall in the meet. The freestyle winners, in addition to Belanger, were junior Tyler Champagne (Orange, Conn./Amity Regional HS) in the 50 (23.75), sophomore Steve Sylvia (Westerly, R.I./Westerly HS) in the 200 (1:56.58), senior Taylor Smolik (Wenham/St. John's Prep) in the 500 (5:39.30) and senior Erik Stricker (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris Central HS) in the 1000 (11:02.60).

Also winning for the Falcons in individual events were junior George Go (Manila, Philippines) in the 100 back (57.13), freshman Janco Cornelius (Brookfield, Conn./Brookfield HS) in the 100 breast  (1:05.10) and senior Matt Wessels (Epsom, N.H./Bishop Brady HS) in the 100 individual medley (1:00.13).

Bentley, 2-0, will swim at UMass-Dartmouth next Wednesday at 6 pm.
