Fitzpatrick's Goal Lifts Bentley Past Stonehill 1-0

WALTHAM, Mass. – Junior back Tom Fitzpatrick (Coventry, Conn./East Catholic) scored the breakthrough goal in the 64th minute to help the Bentley men's soccer team defeat Northeast-10 rival Stonehill 1-0 on Wednesday afternoon.

Though Bentley dominated possession for much of the match, they were left frustrated in a scoreless match until Fitzpatrick's breakthrough four minutes past the hour mark. Freshman Jose Tirado (Lima, Peru/FDR) swung in a corner kick, and Fitzpatrick was there to meet it and head it home amongst traffic in the six-yard box.

Junior Andrew Fenn (Fort Collins, Colo./Rocky Mountain) almost made it 2-0 in the 88th minute, but his drive from 20 yards away was denied by Stonehill keeper Adam Colella.

The Falcons (3-3-0, 2-2-0 NE-10) have now won two straight after dropping their first two NE-10 matches, and bring their conference record to .500. Stonehill (3-4-0, 2-2-0 NE-10) drops its second straight.

Neither team found the back of the net in the first half, though both teams had one good chance denied by the goalkeeper. A low, driving shot by Bentley's Scott Levy (Canton, Mass./Canton) from the top of the penalty area was denied by Colella with a sliding, kick save in the 16th minute.

Stonehill's chance came in the 23rd minute, on a shot by sophomore Drew Montano that was headed for the upper-left corner of the net, but a diving fingertip save by sophomore keeper Jack Blatchford (Douglas, Mass./Douglas) prevented the goal. Blatchford, making his third straight start in goal, picked up the win to improve his record to 2-1 on the season.

Bentley had another near-miss just before halftime. The Falcons had good build-up play, resulting in sophomore back Stephen Silva (Suffield, Conn./Suffield) playing a pass off to Tirado. Tirado then ripped a 25 yard shot that twisted just past the far post.

The Falcons will look to make it three straight wins on Saturday when they trek up to Syracuse to play Le Moyne. Kickoff is set for 12:00 pm.
