Zeiner Named 2012-13 Northeast-10 Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year

WALTHAM, Mass. – In a year filled with awards and honors, Bentley University senior men's soccer player Weston Zeiner (North Granby, Conn./Granby Memorial) took home one final award Monday night, as he was named the Northeast-10's Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year for the 2012-13 athletic year.

The award was presented at the conference's annual year-end banquet in Falmouth, Mass. A committee of faculty members and athletic administrators from Northeast-10 institutions select the conference's annual Outstanding Scholar-Athletes.

Said head coach Gary Crompton, who coached Zeiner for all four of his seasons at Bentley, "I have been involved in college soccer for 25 years, and Weston is one of the very best that I have worked with. He is a gentleman and a scholar and is a tribute to what college athletics represents. This award is the perfect ending for a student-athlete who will be remembered as one of the very best to ever wear a Bentley jersey."

In four seasons Zeiner, a center-back, played in 66 matches and helped the Falcons reach the NE-10 playoffs in each season, including the NE-10 finals in 2010. While his stellar play at the back helped Bentley be one of the top defensive teams in the conference, he also contributed offensively throughout his career with 15 goals and 8 assists for 38 points.

A two-year captain, Zeiner perhaps saved his best play for his senior campaign, racking up a multitude of awards. Among them, NE-10 Defensive Player of the Year, first team All-Conference (for the third straight year), Division II third team All-America from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America and first team All-East Region from Daktronics.

Not just a superb player, Zeiner also excelled in the classroom and graduated from Bentley in May with a 3.84 GPA in accountancy. He has twice been named a Capital One Academic All-America, earning first team accolades this season. This season also saw him chosen to the NSCAA's Scholar All-America first team, and named the NE-10's Men's Soccer Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence Award winner.

Zeiner, who was also Bentley's Outstanding Senior Male Athlete this year, was also one of three finalists for the NE-10's Man of the Year Award Monday night.
