Panzu Goal in 51st Minute Lifts Southern Connecticut Past Bentley, 2-1

WALTHAM, Mass. – Senior Cedric Panzu (Mons-El-Baroeul, France) scored an unassisted goal in the 51st minute to break a 1-1 tie and propel Southern Connecticut State University to a 2-1 win over Bentley University in Northeast-10 Conference men's soccer Friday afternoon at Bentley.

Bentley, ranked fourth in the NCAA Division II East Region this week, finished the regular season at 9-6-2 overall (7-5-1 NE-10) and will now be on the road for the quarterfinals of the conference playoffs, which start Tuesday.  Southern Connecticut, unranked regionally, improved to 8-7-1 overall and finished even with the Falcons in the NE-10 standings.

Bentley got on the scoreboard first with sophomore Cody Osgood (Harvard/Bromfield School) drilling the ball into the right corner in the 13th minute, his third of the season assisted by senior Eric Ulmer (Woodbury, N.J./Woodbury HS).

The equalizer was scored by Southern All-America Paul Templeton (Saltcoats, Scotland) with 15:44 left in the first half. He took a direct kick from just outside the box and lined the ball into the top of the cage.

Panzu's game-winner, the only goal of the second half, was scored out of a scramble in front of the net, with 39:29 left in the regulation.

The Falcons' best scoring opportunities of the second half came in the final 80 seconds.  A shot from senior Ryan Miamis (Dracut/Dracut HS) was blocked by an Owl defender on the goal line, and an attempt shortly thereafter from senior Matt Solomon (Avon, Conn./Avon Old Farms School) sailed just over the cage.

Senior Andrew Esposito (West Haven, Conn.) had one save for Southern and Matt Reynolds (Nashua, N.H./Bishop Guertin HS) was credited with five saves for the Falcons.

The pairings for the conference tournament will be announced after Saturday's action.
