Zeiner Sends Bentley to Semifinals with OT Winner

WALTHAM, Mass. – Sophomore Weston Zeiner (North Granby, Conn./Granby Memorial) scored 5:10 into overtime as third seeded Bentley University defeated sixth seeded New Haven 1-0 in the quarterfinals of the 2010 Northeast-10 Men's Soccer Championship.

Zeiner headed in a corner kick from sophomore Brennan DaCosta (San Diego, Calif./Westview) past New Haven keeper J.J. Comeau to give Bentley the win, its first in the postseason since 2003. The Falcons will play ar second seeded Southern Connecticut Friday in the semifinals.

In the scoreless regulation, both teams had quality scoring chances. Freshman Cody Osgood (Harvard, Mass./Bromfield School) had a volley saved by Comeau right at the goal line off a free kick in the 11th minute. A header by Zeiner was denied by Comeau off corner kick in the 35th minute.

Early in the second half, graduate student Bill Nussdorfer (Harvard, Mass./Bromfield School) had a free kick from 25 yards out whistle right over the cross bar. New Haven's first quality chance came in the 55th minute, when sophomore Andres Nunez launched a long shot from the right wing that bounced off the cross bar.

The Falcons had two excellent chances a minute apart, starting in the 71st minute. Off of a free kick, DaCosta took the second ball in the box and just sent a volley over the bar. On Bentley's next possession, junior Ryan Miamis (Dracut, Mass./Dracut) received a perfect cross in the box but his shot just went over the bar.

Bentley dodged a major bullet in the 75th minute. Freshman Gui Dos Santos took a cross on the right wing and sent a shot on net that likely would have had goalie Mike Nikiforov (Framingham, Mass./Framingham) beat, but it hit the cross bar.

Nikiforov earned the win and extended his shutout streak to six, while Comeau made six saves in the loss.

The Falcons improve to 11-2-5 overall, while New Haven finishes its season at 7-10-1.
