Assumption Holds on Late to Clip Bentley, 13-12

WALTHAM, Mass. – Assumption held on to a slim lead late in the fourth quarter to clip the Bentley men's lacrosse team 13-12 on Wednesday night in a Northeast-10 matchup.

Bentley got to within one goal of the Greyhounds three times in the fourth quarter, but couldn't close the gap any further. The first was after a Matt Sanford (Stratham, N.H./Bow) goal, from Matt Brooks (Brunswick, Maine/Philips Exeter), at the 9:42 mark to make the score 11-10. The second time was after a goal by Timmy Day (Westfield, N.J./St. Joseph's), assisted by Sam Hurley (Medfield, Mass./Medfield), at the 3:29 mark to make the score 12-11.

However the Greyhounds answered after each goal to go back up by two goals. Travis Reid scored a man-up goal at 8:04 to answer Sanford's goal, and Dan Farrell found the back of the net at 2:30 to answer Day's goal.

Bentley's Alex Astarita (Bedford, N.H./Bishop Guertin) scored with one second left to make the game 13-12, but there wasn't enough time left after the face-off for them to score again.

In the first half, a hot start by the Greyhound saw Bentley fall behind 7-2 midway through the second quarter. However, the Falcons turned the tables and reeled off a 4-0 run before the end of the half. Joe DiRaimo (Huntington, N.Y./John Glenn), Brooks and Sanford scored three goals in a span of 2:14 to cut the deficit to 7-5, then Michael Fricke (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Valor) scored unassisted with just nine seconds left in the half to make it a 7-6 game at the break.

Assumption though outscored Bentley 4-2 in the third quarter, with both Falcon goals coming from Astarita.

The Greyhounds improved their records to 7-2 overall and 5-2 NE10 with the victory, while the Falcons dropped to 3-6 and 2-5. They will look to bounce back on Saturday with a visit to Saint Anselm.
