No. 16 Southern N.H. Holds Off No. 20 Bentley, 12-11

WALTHAM, Mass. – Southern New Hampshire prevented Bentley from scoring on the game's final possession, as the 16th ranked Penmen defeated the 20th ranked Falcons in Northeast-10 men's lacrosse on Tuesday night.

Bentley trailed 12-9 with 5:33 left in the game after Southern's Joseph Mayernik scored the 5th unanswered goal for them. Bentley though chipped away and got to within one goal. Sophomore Alex Astarita (Bedford, N.H./Bishop Guertin) scored at the 3:13 mark, and junior attacker Chris Wiggins (Acton, Mass./Acton-Boxborough) struck with 1:17 remaining to make it a 12-11 game.

Bentley's Max Adler (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla./Northfield Mt. Hermon) won the ensuing face-off, and Bentley had a shot on goal with 46 seconds left that was saved by SNHU goalie Michael Brawley. The Penmen though failed to clear, and Bentley had possession back with 20 seconds left after a Penmen timeout. Coming out of the timeout though, they couldn't get a good shot off, and SNHU held on for the win.

The Falcons led 7-6 going into the 4th quarter, but the Penmen tied it at the 13:18 mark on a man-down goal by midfielder Khyan Gaddy. Bentley then went back in front with two straight goals; a man-up goal from Sam Hurley (Medfield, Mass./Medfield), his 4th of the night, and a goal by Astarita, which gave them a 9-7 lead at the 11:11 mark.

SNHU though proceeded to go on a 5-0 run, which started with a goal from midfielder Zach Jacobs at 9:59, and ended with Mayernik's goal at 5:33.

The defeat snapped Bentley's three game winning streak and dropped its record to 3-2, 2-1 in the NE10. The Penmen improved to 4-2 overall and 2-2 NE10.

Bentley's next game is Saturday at home against Saint Michael's.
