Bentley Secures 8-7 Road Win at Saint Michael’s

COLCHESTER, Vt. – Led by five goals from John Wheeler (Scarborough, Maine/Scarborough) and 12 saves from goalie Daniel Shaughnessy (Sudbury, Mass./Lincoln-Sudbury), the Bentley men's lacrosse team secured an 8-7 road win over Saint Michael's on Saturday to improve to 3-1 in Northeast-10 games.

The Falcons withstood a late rally from the Purple Knights after leading 8-4 going into the 4th quarter, but held on for the victory. The hosts scored twice inside the final three minutes, getting to within 8-7 after a goal by attack Mark Yetter, but a caused turnover by freshman Logan Walsh (Sandy Hook, Conn./Newtown) on the final possession secured the win.

Bentley dominated the opening 30 minutes and led 2-0 after the first quarter and 5-1 at halftime. Sophomore Joe DiRaimo (Huntington, N.Y./John Glenn) scored the game's first goal just 1:38 in, but another goal wasn't scored until Wheeler found the back of the net with 15 seconds left in the quarter. That set off a spurt of three goals in under three minutes stretching into the 2nd quarter, with Matt Sanford (Stratham, N.H./Bow) also scoring. Alex Astarita (Bedford, N.H./Bishop Guertin) also scored, 52 seconds before halftime.

Wheeler went off for three goals in the 3rd period, but Saint Michael's offense awoke for three goals, cutting Bentley's lead to 8-4 heading into the final 15 minutes. A man-up goal by Saint Michael's Jamie McGill with 10:19 to go trimmed the lead to 8-5. The Knights would score twice more under the three minute mark, but Walsh's caused turnover sealed it.

Now 4-2 overall, Bentley is back at home on Wednesday night to host No. 4 Merrimack.
