Baker & Murphy Take Major Awards; Five Named All-Conference

WALTHAM, Mass. – Senior Josh Baker (Randolph, N.J./Randolph) was named Goalkeeper of the Year and head coach Jim Murphy was named Coach of the Year, the Northeast-10 announced Thursday in revealing its 2014 major award winners and All-Conference teams.

Baker was also named first team All-Conference, while four of his teammates joined him in earning All-Conference honors. Junior attack Cutler Dimond (Marblehead, Mass./Tabor Academy) and senior defenseman Billy Sweeney (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) were voted second team All-Conference. Attacker John Wheeler (Scarborough, Maine/Scarborough) and defenseman Connor Holbrook (Amherst, N.H./Souhegan) were chosen to the All-Rookie team.

The Coach of the Year Award is the fifth of Murphy's career as he led Bentley to an 8-6 regular season record and a 7-4 mark and fourth-place finish in the NE-10, one of the most competitive men's lacrosse conferences in Division II. The Falcons were picked sixth in the NE-10 Preseason Coaches' Poll and they exceeded that prediction by two spots. He also led Bentley to its 12th playoff appearance in the last 14 seasons, and they defeated Southern New Hampshire 8-7 in Tuesday's first round, setting up a semifinal date with top-seeded Adelphi on Friday.

Baker had a stellar season between the pipes for the Falcons. He started all 13 games during the regular season, and went 7-6 with a 7.97 goals against average and .594 save percentage. He ranks fifth in the Northeast-10 in both of those categories, and played more minutes than all but one of the goalies ahead of him. Baker was twice named the NE-10 Goalie of the Week (March 31, April 21), and he even scored a goal against Southern New Hampshire during the regular season. He's the first Falcon ever to be named Goalie of the Year.

Dimond enjoyed a solid first season with the Falcons, leading the team with 21 goals and 30 points during the regular season. He scored a goal in all but one game and had multiple goals in seven games, including hat tricks in wins over AIC March 15 and Saint Michael's April 1. Dimond also had the game-winning overtime goal against Assumption April 12.

Sweeney had another standout season in leading the Bentley defense. A team co-captain, he started every game and led the team in caused turnovers (13). A preseason All-New England pick, Sweeney has helped Bentley to the 12th best scoring defense in Division II at 7.92 goals per game.

Wheeler had 10 goals and 10 assists for 20 points during the regular season, placing third on the squad in goals and points and leading in assists. He had a hat trick against Merrimack April 9 and had two assists in two different games, including a win over Franklin Pierce April 19.

Holbrook started the final eight regular season games and Tuesday's playoff win over Southern New Hampshire. He collected 12 ground balls and caused nine turnovers, while helping Bentley to the third lowest goals against average in the conference.
