Big Fourth Quarter Pushes No. 10 NYIT Past Bentley 13-6

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. – A five goal fourth quarter by No. 10 NYIT helped the Bears defeat Bentley University 13-6 Wednesday afternoon in non-conference men's lacrosse. Senior Brendan Grant (Walpole, Mass./Xaverian Brothers) had a hat trick and Richard Travers (Longmeadow, Mass./Longmeadow) had three assists for the Falcons.

Bentley was within 8-5 after three quarters, but a run of five straight goals by the Bears in the fourth, with two coming in the first six-plus minutes, put the game out of reach. Freshman Ryan Brunet scored just 16 seconds in, and that was followed by the first of two straight goals by sophomore Cory Triola with 8:42 left to make it 10-5.

After the opening goal by NYIT's Brandon Gamblin put them up 1-0, Grant tied it with a man-up goal with 7:32 remaining in the first quarter. But the Bears scored three straight times over the rest of the quarter, including one by sophomore Tom Duggan with three seconds to go.

Grant cut the lead to 4-2 by netting his second of the afternoon at the 11:12 mark of the second quarter, but freshman Luke Miller answered back just seven seconds later. That was the last goal of the half and the Bears went into the locker rooms leading 5-2.

The teams alternated goals throughout the third quarter, with Bentley's Dan Keefer (Wayland, Mass./Wayland) getting the first one to make it a two goal deficit, but that's as close as the Falcons could get the rest of the way. Senior J.D. Ayer (Rochester, N.Y./McQuaid Jesuit) and Grant had the other goals in the quarter for Bentley.

NYIT improves to 5-2 on the year and Bentley drops to 0-2. Their next game is the home-opener on March 24 against Pace.
