Bentley Drops Opener to No. 7 C.W. Post 13-7

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – The Bentley men's lacrosse team got its 2012 season under way Saturday afternoon, but came up short to No. 7 C.W. Post by a score of 13-7. Brendan Grant (Walpole, Mass./Xaverian Brothers), Richard Travers (Longmeadow, Mass./Longmeadow) and Steve Caditz (Mercer Island, Wash./Mercer Island) each had two goals for the Falcons.

Bentley fell behind 2-0 early in the first quarter, but goals by Caditz and Travers pulled them even at the 7:04 mark. Senior J.D. Ayer (Rochester, N.Y./McQuaid Jesuit) gave the Falcons their only lead of the game with 3:31 left in the first, before the Pioneers' Dennis Gannon equalized just before the end of the quarter.

The teams traded goals over the first two minutes of the second quarter to make it 4-4, before the Pioneers netted the game's next three goals to take a 7-4 lead with 4:50 left in the half. Caditz got one back for Bentley before halftime to make it 7-5 at the break.

After the first six minutes of the third quarter were scoreless, a goal by Keith Rodriguez with 9:00 minutes left, the third of his four on the afternoon, helped C.W. Post start to pull away as they outscored Bentley 4-1 in the quarter to lead 11-6 after three. Grant had the Falcons' only goal of the period in a man-up situation at the 4:13 mark.

Just 1:38 into the fourth, Justin Patterson extended the hosts' lead to 12-6. That was the last goal for more than 11 minutes before Grant had an unassisted goal to finish the scoring for Bentley.

Sophomore goalie Brian Karl (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) made his first career start for Bentley, before giving way to junior Josh Baker (Randolph, N.J./Randolph) late in the game. Sam Price picked up the win for C.W. Post.

The Pioneers improve to 3-1 on the season with the win, while Bentley goes to 0-1. The Falcons are back in action Wednesday afternoon at No. 9 New York Tech.
