Mansfield Nets Hat Trick as Bentley Completes Sweep of Mercyhurst, 8-4

WALTHAM, Mass. – Ryan Mansfield scored a hat trick as Bentley defeated Mercyhurst 8-4 on Saturday night to complete the series sweep.

After a 4-0 win on Friday, Bentley exploded offensively to finish the sweep.

Six different players scored goals and 14 different players had at least one point.

Mansfield's hat trick is the third by a Falcons this season, joining A.J. Hodges and Ethan Leyh. And the eight goals scored is the team's most since Jan. 10, 2014 against RIT.

Mansfield scored the game's first goal just 1:10 into the contest. Chase Davis netted his third goal of the series with a power play tally at the 5:34 mark for a quick 2-0 lead.

Mercyhurst scored two goals before the period ended to make it 2-2 after the opening 20 minutes.

The Falcons went ahead for good when defenseman Tucker Hodgson scored on a slap shot from the blue line at 8:37 of the 2nd period. Mansfield then scored his second of the night at 16:42 to give Bentley a 4-2 lead.

Mercyhurst pulled a goal back with a power play tally by Kyler Head at 17:42, but just 58 seconds later Arlo Merritt lit the lamp as the Falcons led 5-3 going into the third frame.

Freshman Kellan Hjartarson scored at 9:04 of the 3rd period for a 6-3 lead.

Bentley then finished the game with a flourish with two goals in 15 seconds. Stephen Castagna scored on the power play at 17:07 and Mansfield finished the hat trick at 17:22.

Bentley's record improved to 13-13 overall and 9-9 in Atlantic Hockey.

Next weekend they are at RIT for a two game series.
