MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. - In a back-and-forth game, two Robert Morris goals in the final 4:24 of the third period secured the Colonials a 4-3 win over the Bentley Falcons.
Bentley outshot the Colonials 54-22 but graduate student goalie Chad Veltri made 51 saves. The Falcons went 2-3 on the power play with the goals by Nik Armstrong-Kingkade and Jonathan Bendorf.
Robert Morris came out quickly when Cameron Hebert buried a goal off a George Krotiris saucer pass to give the Colonials a 1-0 lead just 3:11 into the game.
The Falcons came out flying in the second. Freshman Chase Davis's first goal as a Falcon came on a deflection 13:35 into the second period to even the score 1-1. Ryan Nause and Ryan Mansfield registered the assists on the play.
Just 1:02 later, Bentley got their first lead of the night thanks to Armstrong-Kinkade's power play goal on a rebound. Ethan Leyh and Sam Deurr got the assists.
With 36 seconds remaining in the period, Dallas Tulik tied the game 2-2 to shift momentum back in the Colonials' direction. Despite Bentley outshooting Robert Morris 28-5 in the second, it was 2-2 heading into the third.
The third period started well for the Falcons, with Bendorf burying a one-timer power play goal with 14:15 to play. A.J. Hodges and Ryan Nause collected the helpers on the Bentley goal.
Robert Morris though tied it and with 4:24 left on the clock Cameron Garvey made the contest at three.
Garvey was back on the ice a couple of shifts later and scored the go-ahead goal while being knocked down with 2:45 to play to give Robert Morris back the lead, 4-3.
The Falcons' final push came up just short, and the Colonials were able to sneak out the 4-3 victory. The two teams rematch Saturday with a 4:00 P.M. puck drop.
