WALTHAM, Mass. – Niagara held off Bentley late in the 3rd period for a 4-2 victory on Saturday night in Atlantic Hockey action.
Trailing 3-1 late in the 3rd period, junior Cole Kodsi (Boca Raton, Fla.) scored to cut Niagara's lead to 3-2.
The goal came after Kodsi made a steal near Niagara's blue line and had a breakaway. He fought off the trailing Niagara defender and beat goalie Chad Veltri to the stick side.
Bentley then pulled goalie Nicholas Grabko (Channahon, Ill.) with 1:15 remaining, which put the teams with the same amount of skaters since Bentley was already on the penalty kill.
Bentley had a couple of good looks at goal, a shot by Harrison Scott (San Jose, Calif.) was blocked and a shot by Dylan Pitera (Culver, Indiana) went wide. But just as the penalty expired, Niagara's Albin Nilsson scored an empty-net goal with 19 seconds left.
Pitera had given Bentley a 1-0 lead at 7:23 of the 1st period with his 3rd goal of the year. Lucas Vanroboys (Thamesville, Ontario) had the assist after a pass to Pitera in the neutral zone allowed him to break down the right wing with speed. He then beat Veltri to the stick side with a shot from the faceoff circle.
Niagara though went in front with two goals in 23 seconds, first from Casey Carreau at 17:31 followed by Olivier Gautheir at 17:54 to lead 2-1 at the first intermission.
Bentley finished the game with a 34-19 edge in shots.
They will be back in action next weekend at Air Force.
