Bentley Tops Air Force in Shootout on Vanroboys’ Goal

WALTHAM, Mass. – Lucas Vanroboys (Thamesville, Ontario) scored in the 4th round of the shootout to give Bentley a shootout victory against Air Force and two points in a thriller at Bentley Arena on Saturday.

The game ended in a 4-4 tie after Bentley erased a 4-2 deficit. Freshman Harrison Scott (San Jose, Calif.) scored with 3:45 left in the 2nd period to pull Bentley closer.

Grad student Brendan Hamblet (Hopkinton, Mass.) then scored the tying goal with just 2:30 left in regulation to tie the game 4-4.

Neither team was able to score in the 3-on-3, five minute overtime to send the game to a shootout.

Both teams scored in the first round of the shootout, with Will Gavin scoring for Air Force and Bentley's Matt Gosiewski (Wilton, Conn.) matching him.

Neither team scored in the 2nd and 3rd rounds. Air Force's Mitchell Digby and Bentley's Drew Bavaro (Bradenton, Fla.) were denied by the respective goalies, Air Force's Alex Schilling and Bentley's Nicholas Grabko (Channahon, Ill.).

In the 3rd round, Grabko denied Air Force's Sam Brennan and Schilling stopped Scott to send the shootout to sudden death.

In the 4th round, Grabko stopped Willie Reim to give Vanroboys a chance to win it. The junior from Ontario did just that with a shot that beat Schilling high to his glove side.

The result gave Bentley two points from the game as the team's Atlantic Hockey record moved to 10-12-2. Air Force's AHA record moved to 10-11-3.

The game was tied 1-1 after the first period, with Air Force's Andrew DeCarlo scoring at the 18:13 mark and Bentley's Luke Orysiuk (Edmonton, Alberta) scoring with a slap shot blast with 50 seconds left in the period.

Orysiuk scored his second of the night at 3:57 of the 2nd frame to give Bentley a 2-1 lead. But Air Force then reeled off three unanswered goals in less than five minutes to take a 4-2 lead.

Scott's goal at the 16:15, his 4th of the season, stemmed the tide and made it a 4-3 game and set the stage for the final period.

Bentley will now face Holy Cross in a home and home series on the final weekend of the regular season. The first game of the series is at home on Friday night.
