Bentley Drops Series Opener to RIT 2-1

WALTHAM, Mass. – RIT scored two second period goals in a 2-1 victory over Bentley University on Friday night in the first of two games between the teams this weekend.

Bentley goalie Evan DeBrouwer (Blenheim, Ontario) made 26 saves but saw his personal seven game winning streak snapped.

The Falcons jumped out to a 1-0 lead after freshman Harrison Scott (San Jose, Calif.) scored a power play goal with just six seconds left in the period. Scott tipped in a slap shot from grad student defenseman Matt Lombardozzi (Leominster, Mass.) that came from the point. Junior center Matt Gosiewski (Wilton, Conn.) also had an assist on the goal.

RIT though scored twice in the second period. Defenseman Dimitri Mikrogiannakis scored with a shot in front of the net after taking a pass from winger Nick Bruce from behind the net. That tied the game 1-1 at the 3:54 mark.

The Tigers then took the lead at the 13:15 mark on the sixth goal of the season by Jake Hamacher. Hamacher tipped in a shot in front of the net that came from defenseman Ryan Nicholson from just inside the blue line.

Both teams had two power play opportunities in the 3rd period but neither side could convert. With 1:51 remaining and still trailing by one, Bentley sent on the extra-attacker in search of the tying goal. DeBrouwer had to head back to the ice with 1:17 remaining and went back off for the extra-attacker with 58 seconds left.

Bentley fell to 10-7 in Atlantic Hockey play, while RIT improved to 8-6-2.

The Falcons will try to gain the series split on Sunday at 2:00 PM. The second game of this series was moved from Saturday due to the snow storm in the area.
