Bentley Falls in OT 2-1 at Canisius but Earns a Point

BUFFALO, N.Y. – Canisius' Austin Alger scored a power play goal 1:54 into overtime to give the home standing Golden Griffins a 2-1 victory over Bentley University on Saturday night at the Harborcenter.

The Falcons earned a point for getting to overtime and head home with four points from the weekend after winning 7-4 on Friday night. They end the weekend with a 10-6 Atlantic Hockey record and 30 points.

After the teams combined for 11 goals last night it was a more defensive battle on Saturday. The game was scoreless after the first period and the first goal didn't happen until senior Lee Lapid scored for Canisius 3:21 into the 2nd period to give them a 1-0 lead.

The game stayed that way until just before the midway point of the 3rd period when Bentley's Cole Kodsi (Boca Raton, Fla.) scored on the power play at the 9:35 mark.

Freshman Danny Pearson (Vancouver, B.C.) played a pass down low to Matt Gosiewski (Wilton, Conn.) who had an initial shot on net saved by goaltender Jacob Barczewski. But Kodsi was there in front of the net to score off the rebound to tie the game on his 5th goal of the season.

That was the final goal of regulation, and the game went to overtime tied up at one.

In the extra session, with the Griffs on the power play, Alger scored his 11th goal of the season to give them the win and two points.

With the man-advantage Canisius sustained pressure in the offensive zone but Falcons goalie Nicholas Grabko (Channahon, Ill.) turned away the first three shots he faced. Leading up to the goal he made an initial save from close range on a shot by Max Kouznetsov, but Alger followed up and scored off the rebound.

Grabko finished the night with 20 saves, while his counterpart Barczewski made 22 saves.

Bentley will next be in action on Friday, January 28 when they host RIT to begin a weekend series.
