Bentley Knocks Off Army West Point 3-1 Behind DeBrouwer, Three Different Goal Scorers

WALTHAM, Mass. – Bentley University defeated Army West Point 3-1 on Friday night in the series opener between the two teams on Friday night.

Graduate student goaltender Evan DeBrouwer (Blenheim, Ontario) made 27 saves to earn his 2nd straight win.

His 27th and final save of the night was highlight reel worthy. With Bentley protecting the 3-1 lead with just over one minute remaining, Army won an offensive zone faceoff and the puck found its way to defenseman Anthony Firriolo above the right faceoff circle. Firriolo quickly one-timed his shot with DeBrouwer on the near post, but DeBrouwer dove across the crease to make a glove save and keep the two goal lead intact.

Despite Army having an extra-attacker on the ice, Bentley saw out the remaining time to secure the win.

The Falcons scored twice in the first period to lead 2-0 after the first 20 minutes, with the goals by Kohei Sato (Nishitokyo, Japan) and defenseman Luke Orysiuk (Edmonton, Alberta).

Sato scored at the 13:32 after a rush into the offensive zone and shot on the near post. Defensemen Ethan Roswell (Paradise Valley, Ariz.) and Tanner Main (Welland, Ontario) had the assists.

Orysiuk then made it 2-0 at 17:30 with his first goal of the season, with a shot from just inside the blue line. Michael Zuffante (Bloomingdale, Ill.) and Danny Pearson (Vancouver, B.C.) had the assists.

DeBrouwer made 10 saves in the first period.

Senior Dylan Pitera (Culver, Ind.) then made it 3-0 for Bentley with a power play goal at 3:57 of the 2nd. Defenseman Drew Bavaro (Bradenton, Fla.) slid a pass across to Collin Rutherford (Tonawanda, N.Y.), who had an initial shot on goal saved. Pitera was there to clean up the rebound for his 3rd goal of the season.

Army pulled a goal back off the stick off Ricky Lyle Jr with 54 seconds left in the 2nd period, but that was the final goal of the night.

Bentley improved to 5-4 in Atlantic Hockey games with the win, and 7-7 overall. They will go for the series sweep when these same two teams take the ice again tomorrow at Bentley Arena at 4:05 PM.
