Big Second Period Propels Bentley to 4-3 Win at Mercyhurst

Erie, Pa. – Bentley scored four goals in a six minute span in the 2nd period and they went on to defeat Mercyhurst 4-3 on Friday night.

Trailing 2-0 early in the 2nd period, the Falcons quickly erased the deficit with goals by defenseman Connor Brassard (Fitchburg, Mass.) and Jonathan Desbiens (Montreal, Quebec) that came just 44 seconds apart.

Brassard got it started with a goal off a long shot that came from outside the blue line on the right side of the ice. A face-off win in the offensive zone that was controlled by Brendan Walkom (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and fed to Matt Lombardozzi (Leominster, Mass.), who dumped the puck in before it found its way to Brassard, led to the goal.

Another face-off win in the offensive zone, this time by Brendan Hamblet (Hopkinton, Mass.), led to the 2nd goal. Hamblet won the face-off and played it directly back to Desbiens, who snapped off a quick shot past Garrett Metcalf's glove for his 5th goal of the season.

The goals tied the score 2-2 just 3:35 into the period.

A little over three minutes later, freshman Lucas Vanroboys (Thamesville, Ontario) notched his first career goal. Senior Brett Orr (Elkhorn, Manitoba) put a shot on net that was blocked in front of the net. Walkom got a touch on it, and Vanroboys cleaned up the rebound to put Bentley ahead 3-2 at the 6:39 mark.

Mercyhurst tied the game just over a minute later with a goal off the stick of center Geoff Kitt, but Falcons defenseman Charlie Marchand (Calgary, Alberta) scored just over a minute after that to put them back in front.

Will Garin (Mound, Minn.) started a break into the offensive zone down the right wing. Garin then centered a pass that Matt Riggleman (Milford, Mich.) got a touch on, and Marchand trailing the play collected the loose rebound for the goal to put Bentley ahead 4-3 at 8:51.

That six goal spurt by both teams in a span of eight minutes was all the scoring for the rest of the game. Bentley held the Lakers to just two shots in the 3rd period, as senior goalie Aidan Pelino (Oakville, Ontario) made 21 saves to earn the win.

Bentley will go for the series sweep tomorrow at 4:05.
