Bentley Battles Back from Three Goals Down Late to Tie Army 5-5

WATERTOWN, Mass. – Bentley battled back from three goals down late in the 3rd period, and forced a 5-5 tie with Army West Point in an instant classic at the JAR on Friday night. The Falcons scored three unanswered goals over the final 11:43 of the 3rd period.

A power play goal by Army's Brendan Soucie gave the Black Knights a 5-2 lead at the 7:23 mark of the 3rd period, as they looked on their way to gain a series split after Bentley's win at Frozen Fenway last night.

However, the Falcons proceeded to rip-off three straight goals against Army's Parker Gahagen, who entered the game with the 3rd lowest goals against average in the nation.

Captain Max French (West Kelowna, B.C./West Kelowna) got the rallied started with a power play goal at 9:17, which came just under two minutes after Soucie scored Army's 5th goal. French got his stick on a slap shot by defenseman Alexey Solovyev (Moscow, Russia/Lone Star) that he tipped past Gahagen to cut the deficit to 5-3.

Just over two minutes later, Bentley cashed in on another power play, this time with Kyle Schmidt (Menomonee Falls, Wisc./Sioux City) getting the goal. The goal came after Gahagen saved a shot from close range on Bentley's Brett Orr (Elkhorn, Manitoba/Portage). Schmidt battled through traffic to get the loose puck in front of the net, and jammed it past Gahagen to make it 5-4.

The score stayed that way for the next seven minutes. With a face-off coming in Bentley's offensive zone, goalie Jayson Argue (Swan River, Manitoba/Nanaimo) stayed in his net on the other end of the ice. Ryan McMurphy (Broken Arrow, Okla./Tri-City) won the face-off for the Falcons and played the puck back to defenseman Chris Buchanan (San Jose, Calif./Fargo). Buchanan ripped a shot on net that got through the traffic, and past Gahagen, to tie the score 5-5 with 1:47 remaining in regulation.

Over the final 1:47 both teams continued to go up-and-down the ice in search of the winning goal, but neither team could find it and the game headed to overtime.

In the extra session, both goalies, Argue and Gahagen, were called on to make clutch saves to keep the game tied. Argue made three saves and Gahagen two, and the game ended 5-5.

The Black Knights led 2-0 after the first period, and went up 3-0 just 19 seconds into the 2nd period on a goal by Conor Andrle. The Falcons got on the board on defenseman Connor Brassard's (Fitchburg, Mass./Jersey Hitmen) 3rd goal of the season at 7:29, after he finished off a two-on-one down the ice with Matt Riggleman (Milford, Mich./Sioux Falls).

Army went up 4-1 at the 9:19 mark, which was answered by Tyler Deresky (Flemington, N.J./Amarillo) scoring for the Falcons shortly after, as he absorbed a big hit to get a shot off past Gahagen from the right face-off circle.

Deresky's goal finished the scoring for the 2nd period, which Army led 4-2. Soucie's power play goal put Army up 5-2, before the Falcons began their comeback.

The tie moved Bentley's Atlantic Hockey record to 4-6-4 after a three-point weekend against the Black Knights. The team will be back on the ice on Jan. 13 to begin a series at Niagara.
