Schmidt Named Semifinalist for Walter Brown Award

WALTHAM, Mass. – Bentley University sophomore right winger Kyle Schmidt (Menomonee Falls, Wisc./Sioux City) has been named a semifinalist for the 64th Walter Brown Award, given each year to the best American-born college hockey player in New England, the Gridiron Club of Greater Boston revealed Monday.

Schmidt has been having a breakout sophomore season with 13 goals and 18 assists for 31 points in 27 games thus far. He's 2nd on the team in all three of those offensive categories. In Atlantic Hockey, he ranks T-6th in both points and assists and is T-8th goals. He currently has a career high six game scoring streak going, where he has put up five goals and seven assists over the last six contests.

Of the 23 semifinalists selected by the Gridiron Club this year, Schmidt is the only representative from Atlantic Hockey.

It's the fifth straight year Bentley has a semifinalist. Brett Gensler became the first player in program history to win the Walter Brown Award in 2012, and defenseman Steve Weinstein was named a finalist in 2014.

The Gridiron Club will announce the 2016 finalists and winner in March at the conclusion of conference tournaments.
