Burt Extends Series to Game Three with Winner in Second Overtime

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Senior Cameron Burt ended the second longest game in Bentley's Division I history by scoring 1:23 into the second overtime, as RIT staved off elimination with a thrilling 5-4, game two win over Bentley in the Atlantic Hockey quarterfinals Saturday night.

Junior Jeff Smith helped create the goal, taking a shot in the slot that was blocked by a Bentley player, but Burt was there on the goal line to poke the loose puck over goalie Branden Komm (Williamsville, N.Y./Northfield Mount Hermon) and push the Falcons to their second decisive game three in two weeks.

The first overtime didn't yield the winner, as both Komm, who made 58 saves, and RIT's Shane Madolora both denied quality scoring chances from both teams.

For a while it looked as if RIT would win this game in regulation, as they led by three goals twice in the second period and 4-2 after two periods. But Bentley got goals from Brett Switzer (Calgary, Alberta/Spruce Grove Saints) and Brett Hartung (Tallahassee, Fla./Wichita Falls Wildcats) in the third period to tie it and eventually force overtime.

Bentley went on the power play at the 7:57 mark of the third, and just 19 seconds into that penalty, Switzer batted in the rebound from a shot by Matt Maher (Avon, Conn./Westside Warriors) to cut the deficit to one.

A little less than three minutes later at the 11:31 mark, Hartung knotted the game at four after he tipped in a shot from Micah Williams (Valrico, Fla./Wichita Falls Wildcats) for his seventh goal of the season.

Already leading 2-0 after the first period, Smith gave the Tigers a 3-0 lead at 11:02 of the second, but just 25 seconds later Dan Koudys (Grimsby, Ontario/Burlington Cougars) got the Falcons on the board with his eighth of the year after taking a pass from Jared Rickord (Skokie, Ill./Springfield Jr. Blues).

RIT's special teams, which produced two power play goals in the first period, put another up, but this time it was short-handed as Matt Garbowsky scored at 14:41 off the rebound from a shot by Taylor McReynolds to make it 4-1.

But with 51 seconds left in the period, Alex Grieve (Calgary, Alberta/Westside Warriors) scored a huge goal for the Falcons to cut the deficit to two. Maher put a shot on net the Madolora couldn't control, and Grieve was there to lift the puck into the open net for his 15th of the year.

These teams will go back at it Sunday night at Ritter Arena in game three with a trip to the AHA semifinals on the line. Face-off is 7:05 p.m.
