Bentley Takes Game One from RIT 4-1; Gensler Breaks Two Records

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Sophomore Brett Gensler (St. Charles, Mo./Youngstown Phantoms) scored twice and goalie Branden Komm (Williamsville, N.Y./Northfield Mount Hermon) made 46 saves as Bentley seized control of its Atlantic Hockey quarterfinal series against RIT with a 4-1, game one win Friday night at Ritter Arena.

Gensler's first goal of the game at 4:47 of the first, his 22nd of the season and 48th point, broke the program's Division I record for most goals in a single-season, formerly held by Dain Prewitt. That goal also tied head coach Ryan Soderquist's program record for most points in a season at Division I. His second goal of the game at 4:45 of the second period broke that record.

Gensler's first goal set the tone for the night and came just 10 seconds into a penalty on Taylor McReynolds as he knocked in the rebound from a Brett Switzer (Calgary, Alberta/Spruce Grove Saints) shot to give the Falcons a 1-0 lead. Joe Campanelli (Pierrefonds, Quebec/Westminster Prep) had the other assist.

The Tigers though answered back at the 10:40 mark of the first to tie the game one. RIT had a rush down the ice with Cameron Burt feeding a pass to Mike Colavecchia on the far post. Colavecchia hit the post with his shot, but had time to gather the rebound and poke it past Komm for the goal.

Early in the second period Gensler struck again with his 23rd of the season to give the Falcons the lead. The puck was cleared into Bentley's zone down near the goal line, only for it to take a bounce off of Alex Grieve's (Calgary, Alberta/Westside Warriors) skate and right to a wide open Gensler in front of the net. Gensler then fired a wrist shot over the glove of goalie Shane Madolora for the record.

From that point on Komm made the lead stand up with an outstanding effort. His 46 saves was a career-high, with 18 coming in the second period and 19 in the third.

With the Falcons clinging to its 2-1 lead late in the third and Madolora out of the net, Brett Switzer scored on the empty-net with 1:13 left, shooting from the blue line after Trent Bonnett (Butler, Pa./Mahoning Valley Phantoms) blocked a shot to give Bentley control of the puck. Campanelli added another empty-netter with 34 seconds left.

Bentley will go for the series win Saturday night at 7:05 p.m.
