Bentley Takes Game One 5-3 over Sacred Heart

WATERTOWN, Mass. – Alex Grieve (Calgary, Alberta/Westside Warriors) and Brett Gensler (St. Charles, Mo./Youngstown Phantoms) each had two goals as Bentley took game one from Sacred Heart 5-3 Friday night in the first round of the Atlantic Hockey playoffs.

The Falcons are now a win away from advancing to the quarterfinals and will go for the sweep Saturday night at home.

Gensler had four points for Bentley on two goals and two assists, giving him 45 points on the season and moving him past Dain Prewitt for second on the school's Division I single-season scoring list.

Bentley fell behind 1-0 early as Chad Filteau scored at 4:13 of the first period for the Pioneers. But Grieve knotted the score at 13:37, and sophomore Justin Breton (Fitchburg, Mass./Boston Jr. Bruins) gave Bentley the lead with a diving goal at 17:50.

Gensler added to Bentley's lead just 1:41 into the second period with a shot from the right face-off circle. The Pioneers though made it a one goal game a little under 1:30 later when Filteau was the beneficiary of a fortunate bounce off a Bentley player's skate to make the score 3-2.

The score stayed that way for another 10-plus minutes until Grieve scored the all-important next goal at 14:23 to restore the two goal lead, slamming home a pass from Gensler on the doorstep of the net for his 14th of the season.

The Pioneers got back to within one goal again in the third period when Torin Snydeman scored at 11:40, but Bentley's defense held strong the rest of the way, and Gensler potted an empty-netter with 1:04 left to put the game away.

Sophomore Branden Komm (Williamsville, N.Y./Northfield Mount Hermon) made 21 saves to earn his 14th victory of the season. Freshman Andrew Bodnarchuk stopped 37 shots for Sacred heart.
