Grieve, Gensler Lead Bentley to Fourth Straight, 6-1 over UConn

WATERTOWN, Mass. – Freshman Alex Grieve (Calgary, Alberta/Westside Warriors) had six points and sophomore Brett Gensler (St. Charles, Mo./Youngstown Phantoms) netted a hat trick to lead Bentley to its fourth straight victory and a sweep of UConn with a 6-1 win Saturday night.

Grieve's six points ties the program's Division I record for most points in a game, and is the most by a Bentley player since Dustin Cloutier had five against Canisius during the 2008-09 season. Gensler's hat trick is his second of the season and gives him 16 goals and 39 points for the season.

The line of Grieve, Gensler and Brett Switzer (Calgary, Alberta/Spruce Grove Saints) ran riot as they produced all six goals. Grieve had a hand in each of them, scoring twice and assisting on the other four. Switzer had a goal and two assists.

Switzer opened the scoring at 3:31 of the first period, poking in a pass from Grieve on the far post for a 1-0 lead.

The score stayed that way into the second period until Grieve made it 2-0 with his 11th of the season, scoring on a laser of a wrist shot from the high slot at 4:48.

The Huskies got to within 2-1 on a goal by Brant Harris at 12:58, but not before goalie Branden Komm (Williamsville, N.Y./Northfield Mount Hermon) robbed Cole Schneider on a breakaway with a brilliant save. Schneider deked left and appeared to have Komm beat as he went glove side, but Komm sprawled to the ground to make a glove save.

After Harris' goal Gensler went to work, scoring the next three goals. He gave the Falcons a 3-1 lead at 17:30 of the second, and a little over two minutes later scored again to spell the end of starter Garrett Bartus' night.

Gensler completed the hat trick at 6:00 of the third, and Grieve finished his huge night by scoring at 11:41 with Gensler and Zach Ledford (Folsom, Calif./Wichita Falls Wildcats) assisting.

The win improves Bentley's record to 13-12-7 overall and 13-6-6 in Atlantic Hockey. The Huskies fall to 12-17-3 and 11-12-2.

Depending on the result of tonight's Air Force-Mercyhurst game, Bentley will go into the final weekend of the season against Holy Cross in no worse than a tie for third place, and with an outside shot to win the AHA regular season title.
