B. Switzer Wins It for Bentley in Overtime over UConn

STORRS, Conn. – Freshman Brett Switzer (Calgary, Alberta/Spruce Grove Saints) scored with 1:17 left in overtime to give Bentley a 2-1 victory over UConn Friday night in Atlantic Hockey action.

The winning goal came as Bentley kept the puck in its zone as UConn failed to clear, shooting the puck off the boards right to Alex Grieve (Calgary, Alberta/Westside Warriors). Grieve then passed to Brett Gensler (St. Charles, Mo./Youngstown Phantoms), who skated in on goal and fed a backhand pass to Switzer on the near post to beat goalie Garrett Bartus for the win.

The Falcons, who win in overtime for the first time this season after seven straight ties, improve to 12-12-7 overall and 12-6-6 in Atlantic Hockey. It's their third victory in a row and extends their unbeaten streak to five games (4-0-1). Sophomore goalie Branden Komm (Williamsville, N.Y./Northfield Mount Hermon) made 30 saves for the win.

The Huskies took a 1-0 lead late in the first period off the stick of sophomore Billy Latta, set up by a missed shot by Marcello Ranallo. Ranallo took a shot that went over the net and hit the boards, and was corralled by Sean Ambrosie behind the net. Ambrosie then fed a diagonal pass to Latta on the far post, who knocked it in just outside the crease.

In the second period, Bentley took advantage of the game's first power play as Joe Campanelli (Pierrefonds, Quebec/Westminster Prep)  netted his fourth of the season. A shot by Steve Weinstein (Los Angeles, Calif./Vernon Vipers) went wide left of the net, but Campanelli was there in front of the net as the puck bounced to him to stuff the rebound past Bartus at 5:51 to tie the game.

UConn got the better of the period, outshooting Bentley 13-7, but goalie Komm kept the puck out, including two spectacular saves on shots by Ambrosie and Ranallo from close range.

The teams will be back at it Saturday night as the series shifts to Watertown for a 7:05 p.m. start.
