Gensler Beats the Buzzer as Bentley Ties Sacred Heart 3-3

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – Sophomore Brett Gensler (St. Charles, Mo./Youngstown Phantoms) scored with just 0.2 seconds left in regulation to level the score at three as Bentley and Sacred Heart skated to a draw on Saturday afternoon in Atlantic Hockey play.

The Falcons fought back from a 3-0 deficit in the first period with two goals just 13 seconds apart in the second period, but looked like they would come up short until Gensler buried the tying goal right before the final horn sounded.

Freshman Matt Maher (Avon, Conn./Westside Warriors) took a slap shot on net that goalie Andrew Bodnarchuk saved, but the rebound came loose to Alex Kubiak (Tinley Park, Ill./Chicago Steel) whose shot was saved by Bodnarchuk. Gensler, however, was there in slot to collect the rebound from Kubiak's shot and beat Bodnarchuk for his 11th goal of the season.

The Falcons had a power play opportunity in overtime and took all three shots that were put on net in the extra session but couldn't find the winner.

Bentley dug itself a 3-0 hole by allowing three goals in the first period, and it wasn't until late in the second period that they began to dig out with two goals just 13 seconds apart from senior Jamie Nudy (West Chester, Pa./Choate Rosemary Hall) and sophomore Justin Breton (Fitchburg, Mass./Boston Jr. Bruins).

Nudy's goal at 16:15 came after the rebound from a Ryan Kayfes (Maple Grove, Minn./Fairbanks Ice Dogs) shot bounced right to him on the right face-off circle, giving time to beat Bodnarchuk with a wrist shot up top.

Right after the ensuing face-off Bentley brought the puck into the offensive zone, and Aaron Stonacek (Basehor, Kan./Fairbanks Ice Dogs) threw the puck off the boards, which came right to Breton in front of the net for the goal.

Goalie Branden Komm (Williamsville, N.Y./Northfield Mount Hermon) shook off the shaky start and shutout the Pioneers after the first period to keep Bentley in the game.

The Falcons' record moves to 9-12-7 overall and 9-6-6 in Atlantic Hockey with the tie. They'll take on AIC in a home-and-home series next weekend.
