Bentley Erupts in Third Period in 5-2 Win over Sacred Heart

WATERTOWN, Mass. – Bentley University scored four times in the third period en route to a 5-2 Atlantic Hockey victory over Sacred Heart Friday night at Ryan Skating Arena.

The win improves the Falcons' record to 9-12-6 overall and 9-6-5 in conference games, while the Pioneers drop to 2-24-1 and 1-18-1.

The game was deadlocked at one heading into the third period as Sacred Heart goalie Steven Legatto kept the Falcons in check up to that point, stopping 27 shots in the first two periods.

But a fluky goal by senior Mike Switzer (Calgary, Alberta/Olds Grizzlys) just 51 seconds into the period opened the floodgates. Switzer put the puck on net from behind the blue line in a clearing attempt, but the puck bounced right passed Legatto and in to give Bentley a 2-1 lead.

The game stayed that way past the nine minute mark, until the Falcons scored three times in just over three minutes.

Mike's younger brother Brett added to the lead at 11:21, finishing off a breakaway by beating Legatto five-hole. Sophomore Brett Gensler (St. Charles, Mo./Youngstown Phantoms) had an assist on the goal, his 21st of the season and fifth straight game with a point.

The Falcons then converted on the power play 1:16 later, as sophomore Justin Breton (Fitchburg, Mass./Boston Jr. Bruins) redirected Dan Koudys' (Grimsby, Ontario/Burlington Cougars) slap shot from the point in front of the net for a 4-1 lead. At 14:33 senior Aaron Stonacek (Basehor, Kan./Fairbanks Ice Dogs) added a short-handed goal, his sixth of the season.

The Pioneers netted the game's first goal late in the first period off the stick of Matt Gingera on the power play, and could have had a couple more in the period if not for goalie Branden Komm (Williamsville, N.Y./Northfield Mount Hermon) stopping several point blank shots.

Bentley turned up the pressure on Legatto in the second period, getting off 18 shots, but were held scoreless until the 7:41 mark when they finally broke through and tied the game on a goal by Joe Campanelli (Pierrefonds, Quebec/Westminter Prep) off a feed from Stonacek across the crease.

Komm made 29 saves to earn his ninth win of the year.

The series now heads to Bridgeport where the teams will take the ice Saturday afternoon at Webster Bank Arena for a 4:05 p.m. start.
