Madalora Helps RIT Escape with 2-1 Win over Bentley

WATERTOWN, Mass. – RIT goalie Shane Madalora stood tall in the face of relentless Bentley pressure in the third period to help the Tigers escape Watertown with 2-1 win over Bentley and sweep the weekend Atlantic Hockey series Saturday night.

With RIT holding a slim 2-1 lead at the start of the third period, Bentley ramped up the pressure on the Tigers' goalie and put 14 shots on him, but the California native held firm to give his team the win. Bentley had several excellent scoring chances from the likes of freshman Alex Grieve (Calgary, Alberta/Westside Warriors) and sophomore Justin Breton (Fitchburg, Mass./Boston Jr. Bruins) but came up empty.

The Falcons spent almost the five final minutes of the game with a man-advantage, as RIT was called for penalties at 14:58 and 17:14, and goalie Branden Komm (Williamsville, N.Y./Northfield Mount Hermon) was pulled in favor of the extra-attacker with 1:20 left, but to no avail.

After a scoreless first period that was highlighted by an after the whistle skirmish that saw 30 penalty minutes doled out for both teams toward the end of the period, the action picked up in the second period and saw the Falcons score their first goal of the series from Grieve on the power play at 5:41.

Sophomore Brett Gensler (St. Charles, Mo./Youngstown Phantoms) helped set the goal up, feeding Grieve a diagonal pass on the left post and doorstep of the goal with tons of space and time. Grieve was able to settle the puck and made a deke move to beat Madalora five-hole for the goal and a 1-0 lead. The goal was his seventh of the season.

Bentley held the lead for nearly nine minutes before a fortunate bounce for the Tigers allowed them to tie the game. With the puck down near the goal, several players were swatting at it and it appeared to bounce in off a Bentley player, with Brad McGowan getting credited for the goal, his second of the series at 14:22.

The Tigers then took the lead for good with a short-handed goal by Scott Knowles on a breakaway at 19:07. Bentley was more than 90 seconds into its man-advantage and had the puck in its offensive zone, but a turnover and a pass by Chris Haltigin led to a breakaway for Knowles, who finished the play off with a nice deke move for the goal.

The win moves RIT's record to 14-8-2 overall and 11-4-2 in Atlantic Hockey, while the Falcons drop to 7-11-5 and 7-5-4. Bentley now has a quick turnaround for its next game, which is Tuesday night at home against Holy Cross. Face-off is set for 7:05 p.m.
