Grieve’s Last Second Blast Gives Bentley 2-1 Win over Robert Morris

WATERTOWN, Mass. – Freshman Alex Grieve (Calgary, Alberta/Westside Warriors) scored on a blistering slap shot with just 9.7 seconds left on the clock to give Bentley University a big 2-1 home win over Robert Morris Friday night in Atlantic Hockey action at Ryan Skating Arena.

With the score knotted at one a piece and overtime looking likely, a deflection in Robert Morris' offensive zone led to a loose puck high in the zone. Grieve pounced on the loose puck and broke in on net with a Colonials defender trailing him, wound up and blasted a shot that beat goalie Brooks Ostergard and rang in off the cross bar to give Bentley the dramatic victory.

The win snaps Robert Morris' eight-game Atlantic Hockey unbeaten streak and improves Bentley's record to 6-9-3 overall, 6-3-2 in the league. The Colonials fall to 9-8-2 and 7-3-2.

Up until Grieve's goal, the teams engaged in a defensive struggle where goals and scoring chances were tough to come by. Both goalies, Ostergard and Bentley's Branden Komm (Williamsville, N.Y./Northfield Mount Hermon) performed well, with Ostergard making 23 saves and Komm 30, several of which were highlight-reel sprawling saves.

The first period ended scoreless with the teams combining for just 15 shots and two penalties.

The game remained deadlocked well into the second period, despite the visitors owning a 16-8 advantage in shots for the period, but Komm kept the puck out until Robert Morris senior Brandon Blandina finally scored the game's first goal at 14:47. Seniors Furman South and Ron Cramer had the assists.

The Falcons though tied the game up just 1:38 into the third period on freshman Brett Switzer's (Calgary, Alberta/Spruce Grove Saints) fourth of the year. Ostergard couldn't control the rebound from a shot on net by sophomore Brett Gensler (St. Charles, Mo./Youngstown Phantoms), and Switzer crashed the net to put the rebound in.

Bentley's top line for the night of Switzer, Grieve and Gensler ended up producing both goals, and all three forwards had two points. Gensler with two assists and Grieve and Switzer with a goal and assist each.

The second game of the series is Saturday night at 7:05 p.m.
