Four Straight Goals by O’Neill Lifts No. 19 Yale Past Bentley

New Haven, Conn. – Yale's Brian O'Neill scored four consecutive goals to turn a 3-3 game in the second period into a 7-3 game as the 19th-ranked Bulldogs defeated the Bentley hockey team 9-3 Sunday afternoon in a non-conference affair at Ingalls Rink.

In the first ever meeting between the two programs, Bentley took a 1-0 lead 6:17 into the first period and fought back from 3-1 down to tie the score in the second, but O'Neill's scoring streak was the difference.

The Bulldogs improve to 7-5-1 with the victory, while the Falcons drop to 5-9-3.

Sophomore Justin Breton (Fitchburg, Mass./Boston Jr. Bruins) gave Bentley an early lead after finishing off a breakaway that started after he intercepted a pass in Yale's offensive zone. Breton then broke in on net untouched and beat Yale goalie Jeff Malcolm with a deke to the left and a backhander to the glove side.

Yale though tied the score on freshman Trent Ruffalo's goal at 10:28, and just 10 seconds later they took the lead after junior Antoine Laganiere found the back of the net after Yale won the ensuing face-off.

The Bulldogs went up 3-1 at 14:03 of the first on a goal by sophomore Kenny Agostino.

Bentley though got back in the game late in the period after sophomore Brett Gensler (St. Charles, Mo./Youngstown Phantoms) scored his fourth of the year with 38 seconds left. With Gensler positioned in front of the net, Mike Switzer (Calgary, Alberta/Olds Grizzlys) took a slap shot from the point that Gensler tipped under Malcolm for the goal.

Into the second period and still trailing 3-2, senior Aaron Stonacek (Basehor, Kan./Fairbanks Ice Dogs) brought the Falcons level with his fourth goal of the season, beating Malcolm with a wrist shot up top from inside the right face-off circle at 3:32.

Bentley kept Yale off the scoreboard for the next 10 minutes, but then O'Neill went to work, scoring four straight goals to put the game away. The first two came on the power play, at 13:30 and 17:20 of the second to give the Bulldogs a 5-3 advantage after two periods. O'Neill then scored 1:26 into the third period for the hat trick to make it 6-3, and lit the lamp again at 7:45.

Bentley starts the second half of its Atlantic Hockey campaign this weekend with a two-game series at home against Robert Morris beginning Friday night at 7:05 p.m.
