Canisius Salvages Split With 3-1 Win Over Bentley

BUFFALO, N.Y. – Canisius avoided a sweep with a 3-1 win over Bentley University in the second game of a weekend Atlantic Hockey series Sunday afternoon at the Buffalo State Sports Arena.

The Falcons had trouble solving goalie Tony Capobianco as the sophomore made 35 saves to earn the win for the Golden Griffins. Sophomore Brett Gensler (St. Charles, Mo./Youngstown Phantoms) scored Bentley's only goal 9:26 into the third period when they were down 3-0.

Junior Preston Shupe got Canisius on the board first with a power play goal at 9:54 of the opening period. After the Griffs went 0-8 on the power play last night, they scored just 24 seconds into their first power play opportunity of the game.

After a scoreless second period, freshman Mitch McCrank scored what would be the game-winning goal 4:25 into the third period to give Canisius a 2-0 lead. Just over a minute later, sophomore Taylor Law gave them a 3-0 lead with his first goal of the year.

Gensler got the Falcons to within 3-1 with his third of the season, but that was as close as they could get. Freshman Alex Kubiak (Tinley Park, Ill./Chicago Steel) and senior Mike Switzer (Calgary, Alberta/Olds Grizzlys) had the assists.

Sophomore goalie Branden Komm (Williamsville, N.Y./Northfield Mount Hermon) made 29 saves after last night's shutout for Bentley, who drop to 2-1 in Atlantic Hockey and 2-6-1 overall. Canisius improves to 2-3-1 and 2-1-1.

The Falcons return to the ice Friday night when they host AIC, before traveling to Army Saturday night.
