Falcons Play Michigan Tight Again But Wolverines Win 4-1

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – For the second straight night the Bentley hockey team gave sixth-ranked Michigan all they could handle, but the Wolverines were just a bit too much in the end and defeated the Falcons 4-1 Saturday night at Yost Arena.

Like the night before, Bentley trailed just 2-1 going into the third period backed by outstanding work in net by sophomore Branden Komm (Williamsville, N.Y./Northfield Mount Hermon), who denied several quality Michigan scoring chances and made 39 saves on the night.

The score stayed at 2-1 with less than three minutes remaining in the game as the Falcons couldn't find the tying goal. A costly Bentley penalty with 3:12 left put Michigan on the power play, and they took advantage as junior A.J. Treais scored his second of the series with 2:11 remaining to give them a two-goal cushion.

Komm was then pulled shortly after in favor of the extra-attacker, and freshman Alex Guptill put the game away for the Wolverines with an empty-netter with 49 seconds to go.

In a reversal of last night, Michigan netted the game's first goal off the stick of freshman Phil Di Giuseppe at 10:24 in the opening period.

But Bentley knotted the score at one just over nine minutes into the second period on a goal by sophomore Jared Rickord (Skokie, Ill./Springfield Jr. Blues), with sophomore Justin Breton (Fitchburg, Mass./Boston Jr. Bruins) and freshman Steve Weinstein (Los Angeles, Calif./Vernon Vipers) assisting.

Just minutes later, junior Brett Hartung (Tallahassee, Fla./Wichita Falls Wildcats) appeared to have put Bentley in front by finishing off a 3-on-2 rush, but the lead was short-lived as the officials waved off the goal and instead whistled them for goaltender interference.

That swung the momentum the other way, and 34 seconds into the power play Di Giuseppe put Michigan in front with his second of the night.

Senior goalie Shawn Hunwick made 21 saves to earn the win and helped maintain Michigan's unbeaten start to the season at 3-0.

The Falcons next travel out to Amherst to take on UMass Friday night at 7:00 p.m.
