Falcons Hang Tough But No. 6 Michigan Prevails 5-1 In Season Opener

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Freshman Alex Grieve (Calgary, Alberta/Westside Warriors) gave Bentley University an early 1-0 lead, but sixth-ranked Michigan pulled away late to take a 5-1 win over the Falcons in front of 5,090 at Yost Arena.

Despite the four goal final margin, Bentley trailed just 2-1 until the final 4:22 of the game when the Wolverines scored three times to pull away.

Grieve's power play goal at 7:06 of the first gave Bentley a 1-0 lead that stood up into the second period. But Michigan's Greg Pateryn and David Wohlberg each scored in the middle period to give the Wolverines a 2-1 lead.

Falcons goalie Kyle Rank (Islip, N.Y./Markham Waxers) kept it a one goal game well into the third period with solid work in between the pipes, before UM finally cracked him with the late insurance goals

Grieve's goal, the first of his career, came just seven seconds into a penalty on Alex Guptill for high sticking. The goal came off a face-off win by Grieve, with freshman Brett Switzer (Calgary, Alberta/Spruce Grove Saints) and Justin Breton (Fitchburg, Mass./Boston Jr. Bruins) on the assists.

Pateryn scored 2:45 into the second off a face-off win from Travis Lynch to tie the score, and Wohlberg put them in front for good with a power play goal at 9:39.

Rank, who made 44 total saves, stopped 41 of Michigan's first 43 shots before Guptill scored with 4:22 remaining. Senior Luke Glendening and junior A.J. Treais had the last two goals.

Senior goalie Shawn Hunwick stopped 18 shots for Michigan, who improve to 2-0 on the season.

The second game of the series is Saturday night at 7:35.
