Chatfield Debuts as Co-Medalist, Helping Bentley Capture FPU Fall Invitational

KEENE, N.H. – A lot of college golfers play for four years without ever winning a tournament. Not so for Bentley University freshman Brett Chatfield (Attleboro/Bishop Feehan HS) as he shared medalist honors in his collegiate debut, firing a 72-71-143 to finish at the top of the leaderboard at the Franklin Pierce Fall Invitational played at the Bretwood Country Club Monday.

Chatfield's effort, coupled with that of junior Malcolm Oliver (Damariscotta, Maine/Lincoln Academy) and senior Jon Stoddard (Duxbury/Duxbury HS), helped Bentley capture the team title in the nine-team, 36-hole event with a 301-289-590. The second-round score and the 36-hole total were both the second-best totals recorded by the Falcons in the last two decades.

Chatfield posted an even-par 72 during the morning round and bettered that by one in the afternoon session, matching the performance of Southern New Hampshire's Jake Nutter. They were both one stroke ahead of American International's Max Bock.

Oliver finished fourth with 75-70-145 with his second-round 70 a career-low and matching the tournament's low round. Stoddard was also under par for the second round, finishing fifth in the 50-man field at 75-72-147.

A Bentley player also took sixth place, although that didn't figure in the team score as junior Tommy Ayers (Bolton/Nashoba Reg. HS) was playing as an individual. He finished at 148 after an opening round 72.

Freshmen Jimmy Brunone (Plymouth/Tabor Academy) and Cal Meyers (Richfield, Wisc./Singer HS) also played well in their first collegiate tournament. Brunone was 20th for 16th with a 79-76-155, and Meyers tied for 21st following an 80-76-156 .

Bentley won the team title by five strokes over American International, with Southern New Hampshire 18 strokes back in fourth.

The next action for Bentley is the Dowling September Shootout Sunday and Monday on Long Island.
