Solid Day One Performance for Bentley at NCAA Golf Regional

CHARLESTON, W.V. – The Bentley University golf team had a solid opening day performance as the 2014 NCAA Division II East/Atlantic Regional got underway at the Edgewood Country Club Monday.

With all five players shooting 77 or better, Bentley posted a team score of 299, its best 18-hole performance since last fall. That put the Falcons in 11th place, in a 20-team field, and just seven strokes out of second place.

Bentley was led by sophomore Malcolm Oliver (Damariscotta, Maine/Lincoln Academy) and junior Quincy Coulter (Lake Bluff, Ill./Lake Forest HS), both of whom turned in a three-over-par 74. Oliver birdied both the par-four eighth hole and the par-five 18th, and Coulter had three birds, two of them on par-fives (fifth and 14th).  Those two are tied for 25th place in the 106-player field.

Bentley also counted a 75 from junior Jon Stoddard (Duxbury, Mass./Duxbury HS) and a 76 from captain Harry Kirkpatrick (Lancaster, Mass./Nashoba Reg. HS). Senior Ryan Hudson (Purchase, N.Y./Iona Prep) followed with a 77, with the Falcons one of only seven teams to have all five of its players within six strokes of par.

Le Moyne College had an outstanding first day, a two-over 286, and will begin Tuesday's action with a six-stroke lead over second-place University of Charleston.  Individually, Zach Kempa of Indiana University (Pa). holds the lead after a three-under 68.

The tournament will continue through Wednesday with the top three teams and the top individuals not on those teams advancing to the NCAA Championships.
