Bentley Struggles in Joe Plante Invitational

CHARLTON, Mass. – In its final tournament of the regular season and without its five best players in the lineup, the Bentley University golf team struggled in the Joe Plante Collegiate Invitational at the Heritage Country Club, placing seventh amongst eight teams in the Assumption College-hosted event.

Bentley, ranked fifth in the NCAA Division II East Regional, finished with a 341 team score in a one-day tournament won by Franklin Pierce University with a 310. Holy Cross finished second, five strokes back, and Saint Anselm College (324) rounded out the top three.

Bentley's top finishers were freshman John Perkins (Middletown/Phillips Andover) and junior Tom Freeman (Maywood, N.J./Bergen County Academies), who both tied for 21st amongst 39 players with an 84. Medalist honors went to Assumption's Matt Wessenberg, with a four-over 75.

Bentley is hopeful of receiving a fourth straight NCAA Division II tournament bid when the field is announced Friday afternoon.
