Bentley Wins 2nd Straight Tournament; Michel Leads Falcons with 69-72-141

BALDWINSVILLE, N.Y. – Led by senior captain Matt Michel (Danvers, Mass./Danvers HS) and freshman Malcolm Oliver (Damariscotta, Maine/Lincoln Academy), the Bentley University golf team recorded its second straight tournament win, capturing the Le Moyne College-hosted Mike Bello Invitational by three strokes on Monday.

Bentley posted a 299 during the second round and finished with a two-day total of 586 at Timber Banks Golf Course. The three-stroke margin matched the Falcons' day one lead when coach Mickey Herron's club turned in the best single-day performance in more than a decade. Concordia College (N.Y.) took second in the 17-team event, and Nyack College and Roberts Wesleyan tied for third, 17 strokes off the pace.

Michel, following a first-round and season-best 69, fired an even-par 72 over the final 18 for a 141, the best 36-hole score of the year for a Bentley player. That bettered the 145 he posted earlier this month during Bentley's victory in the Peter King Memorial on Long Island, and his day two score marked his fifth round of the year shooting 72 or better.

Michel's second straight third-place showing put him two strokes back of both UMass-Lowell's Sylvain Debiais, who won a playoff, and Concordia's Jeff Schaller.

Oliver had his best two rounds as a collegian, posting back-to-back one-over 73s to finish seventh with a 146.

Bentley's other three golfers all turned in a 77 Monday with senior Dan McQueen (Topsfield, Mass./Masconomet Reg. HS) placing 12th with a 148, sophomore Jon Stoddard (Duxbury, Mass./Duxbury HS) tying for 13th at 150, and junior Ryan Hudson (Purchase, N.Y./Iona Prep) tying for 38th at 159. A total of 92 players competed.

Bentley, eighth in the most recent NCAA Division II East Region rankings, will close out the regular season Apr. 23 with the Worcester State Korzec Invitational at Blackstone National in Sutton, Mass.
