Finn, Zeiner & Michel Named Bentley’s Senior Award Recipients

WALTHAM, Mass. – Women's basketball standout Courtney Finn (Winthrop/Winthrop HS) and men's soccer All-America Weston Zeiner (North Granby, Conn./Granby Memorial HS) have been named the Outstanding Senior Athletes at Bentley University, and golf standout Matt Michel (Danvers/Danvers HS) was presented with the 2012-13 recipient of the Edward J. Powers Award as Bentley's premier senior student-athlete.

The Powers award, presented annually since 1965, is named in honor of the late President of the old Boston Garden who was both an alumnus and a trustee of Bentley.

All three received their awards Friday evening when the university held its annual 2013 Falcon Awards night.

The honor is the latest in a series of awards for Zeiner, who distinguished himself in the classroom as well as on the soccer pitch during his four seasons. The 2012 Northeast-10 Defensive Player of the Year and three-time first-team All-Conference selection led the Falcons to a 10-5-2 overall record and fourth place in the conference. In addition to leading the defense, he provided two goals and two assists from his center back position.

Zeiner was named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Division II All-America third team and became Bentley's first-ever Capital One NCAA Division II Academic All-America first-team selection in the sport of men's soccer after making the third team as a junior. An accountancy major with a 3.84 grade point average, the team captain was also selected as an NSCAA Scholar All-America and was the recipient of the Northeast-10 Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence Award for men's soccer.

"It's a coach's dream when your best player is also the hardest working," said coach Gary Crompton. "Some have physical prowess and others are technically skilled, but very few have both. Weston is one of the very best college soccer players that I have coached," praised the coach who has more than 20 years of experience.

Finn, who plans to return next season as a graduate student for her final season of eligibility, helped the women's basketball to a 30-2 season that featured a three-peat as Northeast-10 regular season and playoff champions, a berth in the NCAA Division II East Regional championship game and a number seven national ranking. The 5-foot-9 guard and tri-captain led the team in rebounds (7.1 a game), was second in both scoring (13.8) and three-pointers (47), and was third in steals (39) and assists (74).

Finn was voted to the All-Northeast-10 first team, was selected as a second-team Daktronics All-Region performer, and was an honorable mention WBCA Division II All-America. She'll enter her final season with 1,051 points after becoming the 33rd player in the program's history to reach the 1,000-point milestone last month.

"Our team succeeded due to the contributions of Courtney," said Women's Basketball Hall of Fame coach Barbara Stevens. "She is the type of player every coach wants, highly skilled and self-motivated. She is also the type of player every team wants, unselfish, reliable and committed. Courtney has the confidence to step up and do what it takes."

Michel, a Falcon co-captain, leads Bentley in lowest stroke average for the second straight year, taking a 76.3 into this weekend's Mike Bello Invitational in New York. Last year, he finished at 75.5, the best by a Bentley player in four years, while helping the Falcons to the Northeast-10 championship and a return trip to the NCAA Division II East/Atlantic regional tournament.

Michel, who owns a career stroke average of 77.6, has also excelled in the classroom, soaring to a 3.88 GPA as a corporate finance and accounting major. Last year, he became the first golfer in program history to be selected as a Capital One NCAA Division II Academic All-America (third team) and was presented with the NE-10 Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence Award for golf. Michel was also selected for the 2012 Ping Division II All-East Region team.

"The way Matt has improved over the years has been phenomenal," said coach Mickey Herron of his captain who'll be pursuing his MSA at Bentley next year. "Last fall, Matt received the Guy Tedesco award from the New England Intercollegiate Golf Association for leadership, academic promise and golfing ability. That was especially meaningful to me because Guy Tedesco was my mentor on the cape."

Also recognized during the awards program was freshman Emmanuel Adediran (Watervliet, N.Y./Shaker HS), a sprinter on the track team who received the Student Activities' Rising Star Award for his contributions on campus.
