Bentley Places 5th in Northeast Intercollegiates; Alter & Michel Pace Falcons

FARMINGTON, Conn. -- With junior Grant Alter (Rancho Sante Fe, Calif./La Jolla Country Day) and sophomore Matt Michel (Danvers, Mass./Danvers HS) leading the way, the Bentley University golf team finished fifth in a 12-team field at the second annual Northeast Intercollegiate Championships Monday at the Tunxis Plantation.

Bentley, after a first-round 307, slipped to 318 and finished the tournament with a score of 625. Wilmington College (Del.) captured the team title with a 604, besting second-place American International by four strokes. Post University, the host institution, and Adelphi University also finished in front of the Falcons, with scores of 612 and 613, respectively.

Alter was Bentley's top golfer over the final 18, shooting a five-over 77. He tied for 20th in the 66-player field with a two-day score of 156. That was matched by Michel, who recorded back-to-back 78s.

Juniors Nick Clarke (Plymouth, Mass./Cape Cod Academy) and Richie Powers (Leominster, Mass./Leominster HS) were next on the score list for Bentley. Clarke tied for 27th with a 157 (75-82) and Powers tied for 33rd at 159 (78-81).

Stuart Pulkinen of Adelphi was the tournament's medalist with a 149 (75-74). David McGregor of Post also cared a 149, but the tiebreaker went in favor of Pulkinen.

Bentley's next action is the Dowling September Shootout Saturday and Sunday on Long Island.
